Worldwide, around 10 million people die to cancer every year, making it one of the largest health problems globally. While there are many causes to cancer, a common cause is from exposure to chemicals that raise the risk of cancer.
Cancerous chemicals can be found in products ranging from household objects like cleaning products to cosmetics.
Here are some of the most common cancerous chemicals:
- Plastics. Plastics can be infused with various chemicals to create certain plastic products. These chemicals can sometimes be contaminated with the food or drink that it’s containing. While not all plastics are associated with the risk of increasing cancer, it’s still safer to switch over to reusable stainless steel or metal products.
- Cleaning products. Everyday cleaning products can contain certain chemicals to get the desired cleansing outcome. Some products may have labels that state “chemicals of concern” while others may not. Not all cleaning products are toxic, but certain products containing butoxyethanol (2-BE), ammonia, perchloroethylene (PERC) and phthalates can cause an increase of risk of cancer, hormonal issues, birth defect, liver and kidney damage, and more.
- Fragrances. Fragrances are a combination of chemicals to create a scent. Some chemicals in fragrances are harmful to inhale. Among those harmful chemicals are phthalates, alpha terpineol, benzyl acetate, methyl, propyl, butyl, and methylene chloride. Some of these chemicals can increase the risk of cancer, damage the respiratory system, cause allergic reactions, cause reproductive and developmental issues, and effect the central nervous system.
While there are also safe, clean products to consume, there are also toxic products that we have to be aware of, to reduce the risk of health issues later on.
